About
Stapleton's practice includes painting and sculpture and is concerned with mediating between what is palpable, real and imagined. In his sculptures and assemblages, he often makes use of sparse means to reorder familiar things and produce new and unexpected arrangements. In Stapleton's series of assemblages, And A Door Opened (2007), electrically lit red-black glowing landscapes have been confined to hermetic boxes, which shield and protect their reclusive contents. Reminiscent of 1970s interiors or photographic darkrooms, these dark red-lit environments can be seen as spaces where a process is disconnected and confined in a predetemined state of realisation.
