About

The work of Matthew Houlding challenges preconceptions about art and design, modeling and sculpture, and artistry and craftsmanship. Drawing heavily from retro fantasy, Houlding transports us to a parallel universe in which the dreams of futurist architecture have come true. Awash with the tropical colourings of beach holiday advertising, and composed of Perspex and equally glossy surfaces, structural forms such as Silence in the Valley (2006) are conceivable yet unreachable in the real world. In their delicate hand-crafted construction and idyllic settings, these imaginary homes embody the fragile nature of utopianism and the inevitability of its failure.
