Art Basel Day 1
17 August 2023
We arrived in Zurich to see the work of Thomas J. Price displayed at the Baur au Lac - it was totally magnificent
The next day we dropped into Kunsthalle Basel where we saw work by artist Christopher Kulendran Thomas in collaboration with Annika Kuhlmann which explored the failed struggle for an independent Tamil homeland in Sri Lanka
Next up, we visited Eva Presenhuber where we saw Doug Aitken's incredible film about the erosion of oil production in America how towns grow and then fail. The wonderful Rebaudango family were also there in full force to see this formidable film
Aitken's wall works were eerie and poignant
Then a visit to Liste, a great institutional art fair. I spotted the work of Hugo Servanin titled 'Giant 33'. Servanin has created some sculptural bodies perhaps inspired by Greek Mythology
At Kogo Gallery, 'The Whispers of Unfurling Tears' by Anna Mari Liivrand was interesting
One of my favourite works at the fair was this piece by Vibeke Mascini at Proyectos Ultravioleta
I loved the new works by Katja Novitskova at Temnikova & Kasela Gallery
At Galerie Allen was a blown glass work by Tarek Lakhrissi called 'Tattooed Cobra'. The work was organic and had a life of its own!
I was not the only one at ROH to love the work of Tromarama
The grand finale was the solo show of works by Alexandra Metcalf at Ginny on Frederick
The biggest treat was at the Tinguely Museum where there was an interesting show by Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller. This was the first work I had ever seen of Cardiff's when she represented Canada in the Venice Biennale
Janet very kindly had time to demonstrate her instrument of adventure where each note was an experience rather than a note
