So much has happened since I last wrote. I’ve mostly
found myself thrown into New York with non-stop weddings and engagements but it
was glorious and exhilarating and gave me just enough time for a few gallery
visits.
Austin Lee’s vibrant fantastical paintings felt like you were entering into another, distorted sphere, nothing like anything I had ever seen before with a touch of the ‘80’s.
Then it was off to see Van Hanos - a real master in the making. I felt like was going back in time looking at his works. He loves a good conversation so we had a lovely talk.
Then on to the white monoliths of New York. First stop – the Guggenheim.
The Agnes Martin paintings looked perfect, the best show I have ever seen at the Guggenheim. Everything was whiter than white.
The site of the Twin Towers and a whiter than white mall. The architecture was insanely beautiful and awe-inspiring but there was so much space that nothing really quite made sense. The shops were flagship and boring, there was no sense of community, no activities, no restaurants and hardly any people. I left this architectural space feeling quite deflated but it’s early days so let’s see how it evolves.
My lovely friend Peter Fleissig sent me this amazing picture of Jose Davila’s cardboard boxes in my living room. Donald Judd’s are very expensive!
On my way to Paris I stopped off to see Creative Time’s ‘NYC Doomocracy,’ it was a crazy experience. We arrived at the Brooklyn Army Terminal and were taken inside on a journey about the world economy. Nothing beats ‘You Me and the Bum Bum Train’ but this was a great attempt by the artist Pedro Reyes to get a point over.
We went through many different scenarios - premature death, the environment, the unfair side of capitalism, homeland security, the air that we breathe, gun crime, the Clinton and Trump election to the drugs that are so easily doled out to the people to keep them quiet.
