First 24 Hours in Miami
3 January 2017
Miami Art Basel turned out to tick all the
boxes, I discovered new artists and saw some great works. A number of us were
dreading the trip but it turned out to be really fun, albeit a little
exhausting.
Our first stop was the grand opening of the Faena Forum. It was a lovely occasion with Len Blavatnik and Alan Faena shoulder to shoulder walking up the grand staircase to present the new art forum designed by Rem Koolhaas.
Next day was straight to the art fairs with Design Miami providing loads to see, including great work by Beth Cavener.
UNTITLED art fair feels like it is slowly turning into Frieze art fair New York, a big long white tent that seemed to go on forever. The galleries and quality of art is really getting better and better. One of my favourite works was one of the props at Fredericks & Freiser gallery by Mary Reid Kelley.
After spotting the wonderful Christian Dior handbag commissions in London by artists including Mark Quinn and Mat Collishaw, we then caught more handbags and some great accessories by Daniel Gordon.
Then a great twist with Daniel Gordon’s studies for photographs becoming sculptures.
The Aaron Fowler presentation at Diane Rosenstein was very special.
I loved the work of Emilie Brout & Maxime Marion at Steve Turner, really surprising.
Steve Sacks at Bitforms had amazing work on show by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. Great visual effects capturing and connecting mother and daughter.
