Frieze LA
25 February 2020
I’m in the land of fruit and sunshine! In LA things can sometimes be a little off kilter, such as Kathleen Ryan’s bunch of intricately beaded grapes at François Ghebaly
Kathleen deconstructed a beautiful old mobile home, peeling away parts like a papaya, and added her take on the beauty and disgust of decay. Her work is reminiscent of an old Peter Greenaway movie
I was struck by the realism of Victoria Gitman’s paintings, I do not think I have seen anything so intense since Anj Smith
Talking about beauty, the Nicolas Party show at Hauser & Wirth was full of divinity and inspired by old masters
I loved this painting of the moon, one of my favourite moments in nature
Then there were spellbinding works of mammoth proportions
Here I am all ready for Frieze, my outfit matching the blissful LA sunshine!
I headed straight to Gladstone Gallery where I stumbled upon the biomorphic Anicka Yi
One of my favourite pieces at the fair was this wonderful work by Keith Haring called ‘Absolutely’ from 1986
At Maureen Paley, I loved the new work by Max Hooper Schneider ‘sex: in progress’
The brilliant, strange and intricate work by Lawrence Abu Hamdan called ‘Disputed Utterance’, 2019
My favourite painting by Esther Pearl Watson, ‘Launchpad Intergalactic’
I admired this weird and wonderful glass creature by Kelly Akashi ‘three portals’ at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery
I bumped into HUO along the way. Thanks for the pic!
One of my highlights was seeing the beautiful and effortless artworks by James Turrell at Pace Gallery
There are always pockets of humour in an art fair, Ryan Gander’s ‘A moving object or solid ideas’ made of enamel paint on bronze. Like Frieze, nothing seems to be what it is
A fantastic painting by Alex Hubbard at Regen Projects
Frieze Projects was programmed to perfection
Even Jordan Wolfson had a presence with his witches conjuring up a brew in the middle of Paramount Studios
Also at Frieze Projects, Barbara Kasten had the most impressive installation which is an extension of her photograms. After sitting in the sunshine nibbling pizza we headed over to Felix Art Fair
