IN NEW YORK AGAIN
20 March 2014
Back again as I had so much to return for. Although 25,000 miles in ten days is a little too much but at least there are plenty of air miles to use.
We went straight back to Casey Kaplan where Kevin Beasley was organising a performance bringing in invited guests and recording on to his 52 reel art work comprising of old found cassettes tapes. In this performance he had created an orchestra of analogue radios.
Met Kevin for breakfast and discovered all sorts. He was one of the artists in the Whitney Biennial, has residency at Studio Museum in Harlem, studied in Detroit with Michael E Smith and studied in Yale with Matthew Booth and Joe Graham Felsen. The world is so small.
Straight to Independent where there were some unique treasures: Frances Stark had created some fabulous Instagram photography, Adriano Costa had a whole installation at Mendes Woods Gallery. I also liked this work by Paulo Nimer Pjota.
Then we headed to DISown which was incredible. The wonderful Lizzie Fitch had curated a great scenario with an amazing group of artists including Dora Budor, Jon Rafman, Bjarne Melgaard, Brad Troemel and Ryan Trecartin. Tiffany attempting to climb up the DISown climbing wall.
Emma Dakimakura by Jon Rafman.
Tiffany with David Toro showcasing a Ryan Trecartin T Shirt “Witness”
The next day is breakfast with Jay Jopling at the Mercer. Poju looking very dapper in Jay's glasses.
We head off to the Armory for a short, sweet and very informative visit. Loved the delicious work by Tony Tasset "Night and Day" at Kavi Gupta.
At Jorg Grimm the work of Jonathan Marshall is definitely worth checking out.
I fell in love with this little Franz West, the one that got away.
The evening was very special as it was Lizzie's curated show of Heather Phillipson at Bunker 259, Matthew Day Jackson's special project space. We headed off for a slap up meal in Brooklyn. A very happy Matthew and Heather.
Roy and I demonstrating how to make use of Heather's installation.
Then it was our visit to Still House the highlight of my trip. Inga and Roy hanging out with Alex Perweiler, Zach Susskind and Louis Eisner.
Brad Troemmel. In our first encounter he was showing me his very cool fun old early 90's baggy jeans which he was selling during the weekend.
Jack Greer showed us his rag works representing a history of everything happening around Still House.
Liked this work by Dylan Lynch called Assemblage Malfunction
Then artist in residence Dominic Samsworth had come up trumps.
Something very urban tropical about the work.
Home sweet home and straight to S2 at Sothebys and was really struck by this incredible Chantal Joffe.
Stephan Tanbin Sastrawidjaja had set up Project Native Informant and I was totally impressed.
Then a visit to Hans Ulrich Obrist at the Serpentine Gallery where Haim Steinbach had created the most fabulous show.He had used some of the Zabludowicz Collection amongst others to put an installation together. In this picture is Dan Colen, Gas Blaster, and Mike Nelson Amnesiac Skull.
Strange works including these dirty feet prints were on view.
The interim MA show at the RA was very interesting. A really good taster for the future. The work of Max Prus was fun.
Pippy Houldsworth had opened with Yinka Shonibare and a very suggestive, rude blue work.
Rosson Crow, Francessca DiMattio and Mickalene Thomas had jointly presented a wonderful show together with a few Daniel Arshams thrown in here and there.
Then had an amazing evening out with Rosson Crow to celebrate Karl Lagerfield with Ellen Gallagher and Francis Upritchard.
The week finally wraps up with me checking out at Erno Goldfinger's house at 2 Willow Road where Ryan Gander had made a few compelling interventions.
Then the highlight of the day the wonderful and brilliant Amie Siegel presents her work in conversation with Jeremy Lewison. Great photo of Jeremy Amie and Paul. Watch out for her new film “Provenance”.
