Last Stop Brussels
3 May 2018
Art Brussels was full of surprises. Salisbury’s New Art Centre had set themselves up as a full blown gallery showing some impressive work. It was a pleasure to see these cast aluminum works in the flesh, ‘Self-portrait as reclining nude II, 1927’, 2017 by Toby Ziegler could be mistaken for Matthew Darbyshire’s 3D sculptures
The work of Douglas Eynon ‘Your Face is an Obvious Case' was interesting. There were many works on display showing wonderful casts of faces sculpted by blind people
I was excited to see the Louisa Gagliardi’s ‘Contre-jour’, 2018 at Galerie Rodolphe Janssen’s stand – the painting made a wonderful addition to the Zabludowicz Collection
Mendes Wood DM were showing some strong Michael Dean works
Whilst Gallery Nathalie Obadia was showing my favourite Hans Op de Beeck work called ‘Sleeping Girl’, 2018
I loved the Thomas Lerooy’s work ‘Can’t fly’, 2016 - delicate and thoughtful
I also liked the work ‘Crash’, 2009
The Jiang Zhi ‘Love Letters’ at HDM Gallery was a brilliant discovery
Loved the Frog King at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery’s stand. Lots of life and imagination. A very happy place to be when walking around an art fair
My old favourite Pascale Marthine Tayou was showing a wonderful new work at Galleria Continua called ‘Branch of Life’
A great new discovery was Présence Panchounette - a real heads up for me. Such lovely energy produced back in the 1980s at Semiose, Paris
This year the Discovery Prize went to South African gallery SMAC for presenting the work of Georgina Gratrix
The solo presentation was delightful
Then I went to check out the new work in Paul Kneale’s show ‘Compression’ at ARTUNER. The vivid ‘Scanner Paintings’ were layered using low and high resolution images
There was something very cool about his neon series ‘Event Horizon’, using all sorts of security devices to display them
Then our wonderful trip concluded with a tour of Fernand Léger’s show called ‘Beauty is everywhere’ at BOZAR/Centre for Fine Arts where we were hosted by the art community of Brussels
