Getting ready for my Six Days in New York...
1 March 2011
Before heading off to New York for our first show there: Six Weeks in New York and the action packed Armory Arts Week I made sure to visit Hauser and Wirth. Iwan threw a wonderful dinner to celebrate the collaboration between Tracey and Louis Bourgeois. Tracey looked beautiful.
Our new ICA leader Gregor Muir and guests were being updated by Iwan on his latest fishing expedition.
I popped in to say bye to all the artists in residence at 176 who are making new work for The Shape We’re In – as I arrived Gary Webb whizzed past me on his moped.
On the way to the airport I dropped by to say hi to Vito Schnabel and Alex Dellal who were showing Dustin Yellin for the first time in London. Vito told me later the show was a big success everything is sold.
As soon as I arrived in New York it was straight to 1500 for the opening of the most amazing event - our first US exhibition! We invited NY based curator Alex Gartenfeld to do a project alongside our’s, Lizzie and the 176 team including Roy as her assistant had worked really hard to make a stunning exhibition. Close to 1,000 people turned up to see the shows! The back drop of Times Square was spectacular. I witnessed the sight of Times Square as it transformed from day to night. The art works glistened in-front of this jaw-dropping scenery. The sculptures complemented the brutal concrete environment of an empty building and the luminous neon light of Times Square. The crowd was sensational. I met so many young artists, writers and art dealers. I bumped into so many old and new friends. Amongst the crowd was Clarissa Dalrymple, Stephania Bortalami. Pictured is Nick van Woert’s brand new sculpture, LadyLady made especially for the Times Square back drop.

Nick’s father, Brad was in Town from Reno to support him.
Wendy Fisher dropped by with Pru O’day and her friend from South Africa, seen here with Graham Steele from White Cube and Tiffany.
On the 24th Floor we were showing some of our wonderful Leipzig photographers. Oscar Schmidt had come especially over to represent him and his incredible group of artists friends. He presented me with a wonderful book called Leipzig Fotografie - the current show at the Grassi Museum der bildenden Kunste in Leipzig - which tells the whole story about Leipzig photography. Ulrich Gebert's work welcomes people into the office.
Belgian Collector Filiep Libeert and his wonderful wife who are showing their collection at Andrea Rosen this week came by to say hello.
Oscar Schmidt with one of his works.
Toby Ziegler popped in as well.
Eamonn Maxwell and Pace’s Emily-Jane Kirwan with artist Corban Walker who will be representing Ireland in the Venice Biennale
Irit Sommer dropped by with artists Rona Yefman and Lior Shvil.
Beautiful Effie Shinas came to visit - she worked for the collection way back in 2003. She is very special and curated our first hang at 1500 whilst she was with us. We had many discussions together and she helped us acquire 176. Now Effie is in fashion. She is being held by my wonderful huggy-bear friend Lyor Cohen with Tiffany.
After the reception we all headed off to Mercer Kitchen where there was a wonderful atmosphere. We were surrounded by wonderful people such as Sean Dack, Ethan Breckenridge, Nick Van woert, Langdon Graves, Sarah Braman and Phil Grauer who heads Canada Gallery Dominic Nurre, David Benjamin Sherry, Sam Anderson, Josh Tonsfeldt and gallerist Amy Greenspon joined us.
Poju deep in conversation with Norman Rosenthal and artist Kon Trubkovich.
