The Still House Group take over
6 March 2015
All too soon sadly the Partial Presence show was over and now it’s time for The Still House Group. The show was more than great. The works were perfect.
Dylan Lynch barrels were violent.
Zachary Susskind's 3-D works of prisoner’s heads had a touch of horror and sadness about them.
Joe Graham Felsen with the help of Peter Moran had built an incredible full size structure in the back room - Church, Synagogue and Mosque all overlapping into one form.
Lizzie peeping through the Felsen sculpture with a happy and somewhat sinister Andrew Gbur smiling face painting.
Tiffany Zab curated the middle gallery featuring former Still House residency artists including, Hayley Mellin, Brad Troemel, Dominic Samsworth, Alex Ito and Peter Sutherland.
Isaac Brest and Maitreyi were all happy and relieved everything was completed. They had a huge challenge and the Zab Team and The Still House Group worked incredibly hard to make the show cohere. It was a moment for Still House as they have crossed the threshold from commercial to institutional shows now. The artists have worked together for many years – some for nearly ten years - so there is a strong synergy between the works and they stood up well together. It was a very hard task and the curation was gentle and spot on! Genius even!
We opened with tea on Sunday 1 March - something we have not enjoyed for a while. It was a real family affair.
The Still House Group gathered for a group photo. Jack Greer, Nick Darmstaedter, Isaac Brest, Joe Graham Felson, Zachary Susskind, Alex Perweiler, Pete Moran and Augustus Thompson before they all went on their way - mainly back to Brooklyn, all on different flights, not on their Jolly Up minibus sadly.
In the middle of it all Tracey Emin had been the darling of the Brit Awards. She had designed the award sculptures and her handwritten neons were floating in the room. Now I am on a plane heading to New York for a touch of the Armory as well as Ryan Trecartin and Lauren Cornell’s New Museum Triennial and I cannot wait…Watch this space!
