ZC's Julia Greenway at Berlin Gallery Weekend
25 May 2023
I started the Gallery Weekend off strong by attending a discussion hosted by Spike Art Magazine between panelists Dani Joszef, Blockchain specialist; Penny Rafferty, critic and writer; Black Swan DAO; and Dr. Nadim Samman, KW curator, addressing the potential for blockchain to engage in decolonial practice
Quick selfie on my home from attending the Sprueth Magers Gallery Weekend opening dinner celebrating the Cao Fei exhibition. I didn't take any pictures at the dinner, so you're getting solo mirror selfies for this millennial!
Started the next morning off by attending a discussion between Cao Fei and Klaus Biesenbach. Cao discussed the development of the Sprueth Magers exhibition and her relationship with technology and her practice throughout the pandemic amid personal loss and navigating motherhood
Installation view of Cao Fei's impressive exhibition
En route to a lunch date with artist Johannes Paul Raether, texting Paul Luckraft the hot updates!
I met up with friend a curator Clementine Proby to tour the Julia Stoschek Foudations exhibition by (LA)HORDE. Turns out their staff bathroom are very aesthetic
The next morning, I travelled East to Herzberg to visit collection artist Christopher Kulendran Thomas' studio. Thomas works with a programmed neural network trained on art historical images. This network creates a PNG file that Thomas translates to canvas. The result is a unique intersection of technological tools and modernist painting that examines the methodology of abstraction in the current moment of AI image generation
Here I had lunch and studio chats with artists Rocco Ruglio-Misurell and carrick bell who run the project space Horse & Pony. A couple of absolute babes with their sweet pup Timo. It was such a privilege to see Rocco's intimate sculptural works in person
I then visited the group exhibition 'Human Is' at the Schickel Pavillon. This work by Ivana Bašić alongside collection artist Ian Cheng was a particular stand out
I also visited Jordan Strafer's solo presentation at Heidi Gallery. I really loved this dream like, possibly autobiographical film that reflects sexuality, class and prison reform. Alongside the stone wall stage like facade, the installation felt like this obscure critique of American culture somehow
Gaëlle Choisne in Corps Célestes at Mountain Gallery, a group show alongside Rindon Johnson and Jordan Loeppky-Kolesnik
I then joined Paul for the multimedia performance 'Resurrect In Peace (RIP)' by Anan Fries at HAU3. A technological funeral for the extinct carrier pigeon that consisted of highly advanced motion capture and gaming technologies
After the HAU3 performance I travelled to Gropius Bau for 'Mangrove Sunset' by Asad Raza, a six-hour dramaturgy of sound, speech and changing light. Honestly, this was the most moving conclusion of a rigorous art weekend. I lay on the flood of their beautiful foyer as waves of chanting and music washed over me, it was an absolute gift
Finally, the obligatory airport hot dog. A German requirement!
