Matias Faldbakken

Often working with degenerated industrial materials or throwaway products, Matias Faldbakken strips back the mechanisms of consumption and exchange. The disruptive qualities of this practice are manifested in a visual vocabulary featuring twisted mechanical equipment, weathered bin bags and collapsed office furniture. Untitled (Car Trunk #4), 2013, fits within a wider body of work featuring hollowed out cars and their now useless engine parts. Devoid of their primary functions, the cars are upended as stationary objects. Repurposed for the gallery space, connotations of speed and power are replaced by damage and failure.
