About
Nathan Mabry's work combines modern aesthetics and historical imagery to comment on the relationship between contemporary and past culture. A careful choice of formal, material and conceptual elements allows Mabry to address perennial oppositions such as craft versus industry, representation versus abstraction and ancient versus modern. Mabry references 1970s minimalism by directly appropriating works by artists such as Donald Judd (1928–94) and John McCracken (1934–), which he contrasts with ethnographic sculptures and pre-Columbian artefacts. Mabry's work is an astute investigation of representations of the past in modern culture.
