Performance: patten - Mirage FM

For the final, bonus event in this summer’s Dust to Dust programme, London-based artist, musician, designer, and cultural researcher, Damien Roach aka patten presents his ‘Mirage FM’ live AV show.

Reinterpreting tracks from his album of the same name – the world's first made with text-to-audio AI samples – he uses an ultra-flexible system with embedded precision AI audio analysis in order to ‘crate dig in latent space’ during the live event. Like a rogue scientist crossed with a cybernetic soundsystem DJ, he makes hallucinogenic, mutated audiovisual remixes of the album material in real-time.

The live AV floods the stage with tripped-out, hi-tech AI videos; everything from pop to techno, R&B to opera, hip-hop and grime to ambient, all distilled into half-remembered fragmented forms.

Damien Roach’s projects span art, design and creative direction, publishing, sound/music and audiovisual. Recent projects include immersive AV performances at London’s ICA and Tate Modern, design for clients ranging from Wysing Arts Centre to Disney, and publishing a journal exploring non-dystopic future visions with a host of contributors including Susan Hiller, Dr Isabella Maidment, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Liam Gillick. He has exhibited internationally, including at the 51st Venice Biennale, ‘Learn to Read’ at Tate Modern, Art Now at Tate Britain, ‘Housewarming’ at Swiss Institute NYC, and solo presentations at institutions including DRAF, London, Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, Switzerland, Arnolfini, Bristol, Gasworks, London and Neuer Aachener Kunstverein, Germany.
