Workshop: Mee Jey
About
Led by artist Mee Jey, who was awarded this year’s Mother Art Prize 2023 International Award, this event is an opportunity to learn more about her practice and take part in a practical workshop. The artist begins the afternoon with a presentation of work from her current month-long residency at Mother House Studios, which is undertaken as part of the prize. She will lead a practical element, where participants are invited to contemplate on their ideas of 'securing future/ their children's future' and write them down on prayer flags. These prayers/ ideas will then be shared aloud among the group.
Mee Jey‘s work is concerned with the lived experience. Through large scale installations, durational live, video or photo performances, illustrations and paper works, she digs into her challenges and aspirations. Her changing understanding of what it means to be an immigrant is accompanied by the newfound concerns of being a mother. It is thus no surprise that works deeply embedded in cultural and personal experience are also politically charged. Along with this interweaving of political and personal subjects and Indian cultural knowledge with American material, Mee Jey often engages with the tension between history and contemporary life.
