Announcing our 2014 Programme

The 2014 programme will continue to champion the work of emerging international artists, with activities across the Collection’s three locations in London, New York and Sarvisalo (Finland). The programme will focus on presenting solo exhibitions by artists who in different ways test the boundaries of contemporary art practice, including the first UK solo exhibition of Ryan Trecartin.

The exhibition will feature Trecartin’s installation Priority Innfield, one of the highlights of the 2013 Venice Biennale. This is the sixth Zabludowicz Collection Annual Commission and will be shown in autumn 2014 to mark the start of twelve months of special activity celebrating 20 years of the Collection. Further details of the 20th anniversary programme will be announced in 2014.

Following the annual Testing Ground for Art and Education (16 January–6 February 2014) will be a solo exhibition of New York-based artist Trisha Baga (27 February–11 May 2014), featuring new work alongside a series of installations from the Collection. Baga has gained recognition for her dramatic immersive compositions executed in a playful array of media that flood spaces with light and sound.
Running concurrently with Trisha Baga’s exhibition will be Infinite City, an exhibition produced in partnership with Kadist Art Foundation. Drawing on works from both of these private collections, the exhibition focuses on the city as material, site, and situation for the contemporary lived experience. Sculpture, video, painting, and photography are represented by the exhibiting artists Michel Auder, Slater Bradley, Martin Boyce, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, John Menick, Enrique Metinides, Yelena Popova, Amie Siegel and Kelley Walker.

Throughout the summer the Collection will present a series of four solo presentations by Adriano Costa, Michael E. Smith, Sam Falls and Samara Scott (26 June–10 August 2014). Each artist will make new commissions to show alongside their works which already feature in the Collection.

Prior to their London exhibitions, Sam Falls and Michael E. Smith will undertake residencies with the Zabludowicz Collection in Sarvisalo between May and June 2014. Falls and Smith will be the first artists whose residencies in Sarvisalo will result in the production of new work for a subsequent exhibition at the Collection in London.

Falls as well as Oscar Tuazon will be among the artists whose work will be permanently installed in Sarvisalo in 2014. Several newly commissioned works for Sarvisalo will also be initiated during the year. An open weekend will take place to view the works installed in private locations on the island and more information on the activities in Sarvisalo will be available in early 2014.

Starting twelve months of programming in celebration of the Collection’s 20th anniversary will be the sixth Zabludowicz Collection Annual Commission by LA-based Ryan Trecartin (2 October–21 December 2014). The exhibition will centre on Priority Innfield, 2013, Trecartin’s most ambitious project to date which was featured in The Encyclopedic Palace, curated by Massimiliano Gioni for the 2013 Venice Biennale.
Produced in partnership with his long-time collaborator Lizzie Fitch, Priority Innfield takes the form of five freestanding sculptural viewing theatres for a multitude of new HD video works. Trecartin’s videos can be seen as a contemporary theatre of the absurd. They are filled with youthful and sexually ambiguous protagonists, often in wigs and face paint, speaking with intense and disturbing dialects that reveal a dysfunctional poetry of our contemporary pop culture.

The Zabludowicz Collection Invites programme will continue throughout the year, with a series of six-week-long exhibitions of new work by UK-based artists who are not represented by a commercial gallery. Featured artists will be announced in December 2013.

The annual Testing Ground for Art and Education (public exhibition runs 16–26 January 2014) will return at the beginning of the year with a collaboration between MFA Curating students from Goldsmiths and, for the first time, Curating the Contemporary MA students from the Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, London Metropolitan University.

The second edition of Testing Ground: Master Class (30 January–6 February 2014), an independent educational initiative developed with artist Doug Fishbone, offers a free, intensive programme for a small group of emerging artists from around the UK to discuss and develop their studio practice with leading international artists over the course of a week.

In New York, a specially curated installation of works from the Zabludowicz Collection will fill the newly renovated public foyer. Further details will be announced in 2014.
