Yelena Popova (b. 1978, Urals, Russia. Lives and works in Nottingham)
Popova's work incorporates various media including painting and film. Her painterly style harks back to Russian Constructivism, while her video work investigates themes of balance, ecology and power relations. She studied at the Moscow Art Theatre School and Byam Shaw before graduating from MA Painting at the Royal College of Art in July 2011. Recent group exhibitions include: Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2011 and New Sensations (2011). She was awarded the Red Mansion Art Prize and residency in China (Sept 2011). Forthcoming group exhibitions include Joyful Archipelago, at Guest Projects, London (April 2012), Red Mansion Prize winners show, Royal Academy School (April 2012), Selma Parlour/Yelena Popova, Horton Gallery, New York (June 2012) and a group exhibition at Hilary Crisp, London in September 2012. Solo exhibitions include UNNAMED, at Figge von Rosen Gallery, Berlin (April 2012) and the Outpost Gallery commission, Norwich (May 2012).
